Even though Elon Musk didn’t like how it ended, it’s fitting that The Boys—a show known for satirizing tech companies and political bubbles—managed to provoke the world’s richest man right on his own social media platform. It’s arguably the perfect conclusion for the series.
Is The Disruptor Inspired by Elon Musk?
Elon Musk publicly shared his thoughts on how the villain in The Boys Season 5 finale was handled, but surprisingly, he hasn’t said anything about the character The Disruptor. For viewers who haven’t seen the finale yet, The Disruptor is a wealthy and powerful figure with a passion for space.
Gunter Van Ellis and Elon Musk have a lot in common. Like Musk, Van Ellis is portrayed as the world’s wealthiest person and has a large family – seventeen children, in fact. He’s also an amateur astronaut, and even wears a cap with the phrase ‘We Believe in Homelander,’ making the connection between the two quite clear.
Okay, so the season wraps up with Homelander at the White House, still grappling with his… issues, specifically his obsession with ‘Oh Father.’ Then things get really weird. This Gunter Van Ellis character shows up and basically reveals he’s been exploiting Starlights – using their powers for free in his factory! And, unbelievably, he then launches into a rant about declining white birth rates, trying to get Homelander on board with his… concerns. It’s a truly bizarre and unsettling sequence that leaves you wondering what exactly is going on with this guy.
I couldn’t believe it when Oh Father spilled the beans about The Disruptor to Homelander, but honestly, Homelander didn’t even seem that interested. He just took off with The Disruptor, and when someone asked where they went, he jokingly said he was giving him a trip to space – apparently, Homelander decided to play astronaut! It was a pretty shocking moment, especially knowing this effectively ‘killed off’ Elon Musk again, after that poor goat named Elon met his end in Season 2 of Gen V thanks to Marie. It felt like a really dark, funny callback.
When asked by Deadline if the character was inspired by Musk, Kripke answered:
What made you think it was Elon Musk? Yeah, I mean, the idea of like the Disruptor was a character that has been continually pitched throughout the season, as just something that is really existing in the world that was just such a perfect target, and it never really fit before.
We then needed a scene to clearly show Homelander’s state of mind for the final episode. David Reed, who co-wrote the episode with Judalina Neira, suggested bringing in the character of the Disruptor. It was a brief, satirical moment, intended as one last commentary before the show ended.
Whether Kripke admits it under a veil of cheeky denial or not, the inclusion of The Disruptor serves as the ultimate parting gift from a series that never pulled its punches. Fans may dislike the ending, but the show did end on how it lived: entirely unhinged, deeply diabolical, and poetically political.
